Audition Principals
The Audition Process will be guided by the following principals:
- Students will not be excluded from being cast simply because they are inexperienced.
- The casting procedures will be professional and respectful—keeping in mind all actors face rejection all the time, and feel it.
- All students are welcome to audition.
- Everyone can act, and does so every single day.
Audition Method
Everyone in the theater hates auditions. Anyone with a grain of compassion hates them because you know that you are going to hurt someone’s feelings, no matter what you do. Unfortunately, no one has ever found a better way to cast a play. You have to audition. There are many audition methods, and each is built around answering a particular questions. The Audition Method that will be used is a Cold Reading. This method is extremely fair in that everyone starts from the same point and no one can prepare ahead of time, no one is automatically on the fast track just because they’ve done other plays. Anyone who walks in the door gets the same chance as anyone else. Actors will be given one or two monologues at the audition and be given a few minutes to practice. The actor will then act out the monologue, and in some cases be given some stage directions by the director.
Framework of Auditions
- The audition material will not be available until the audition.
- Auditions will be open.
- Auditions will be public.
